What are Internet tracks?

Why is my internet privacy involved?

Your internet privacy is involved because your internet cookies, internet history and temporary internet files tell all about your internet life.

To ensure your internet privacy you need to remove your internet tracks with our PC Cleaner.

What is anonymous surfing?

Anonymous surfing means to browse internet sites in a way that looks as if you are a first time visitor.

What are Internet cookies?

Internet cookies are files where some information about you is stored. The information stored in internet cookies can be your IP number, your internet browser type, if Java is active, etc.

When you visit an internet site for the first time, this site might plant an internet cookie in your computer. If you visit the same internet site again, that site will read the internet cookie and recognize you.

Can't I just delete Internet cookies?

Yes, you can delete internet cookies so when you visit internet sites, you are not recognized. However a copy of all internet cookies which you have received since you installed Windows is kept in index.dat databases which you cannot delete while Windows is running.

What are temporary Internet files?

Temporary Internet Files (cache) are exact copies of internet pages including all the pictures, advertisements etc. These downloaded internet pages are located in a folder called Temporary Internet Files (also called internet cache). PC Cleaner lets you delete temporary internet files securely.

Can't I just delete Temporary Internet Files?

Yes, you can delete temporary internet files so if someone tries to access them they will not be able to see which internet sites you have visited. Our package makes this simple enough for anyone to do along with many other great security utilities.

What is cache?

When you visit a Web site, your browser automatically copies that page and saves it on your hard drive in a folder called a cache. Caching allows you to revisit those pages much faster, without having to download them all over again. Temporary internet files are a form of cache.

What is Internet history?

Windows keeps shortcuts to internet pages you have visited in a folder called History.

Can't I just delete Internet history?

Yes, you can delete internet history but a copy of internet history is kept in index.dat files. A person with sufficient internet knowledge can easily view index.dat files.

What is AutoComplete?

The AutoComplete feature saves previous entries you've made for Web addresses, forms, and passwords. When you type information in one of these fields, AutoComplete suggests possible matches. These matches can include folder and program names you type in the address bar, search queries, stock quotes, or information for just about any other field you fill in on a web page.

What is a Plug-in?

A plug-in is a software program that extends the capabilities of a browser in a specific way - giving you, for example, the ability to play audio samples or view video movies from within your browser.

What is my home page?

Your home page is the page that you will see each time your browser opens. It is the page that is displayed each time Internet Explorer is launched.

My home page is locked by a website and doesn't let me change it, so how do I change it?

Click Eraser Settings on PC Cleaner's main screen

Enter the URL for your home page

Click Set Home Page

Click Apply

Later, if you want to change your homepage, follow the same routine.

Why can't I find index.dat files on my hard disk?

Because index.dat files are hidden by default. However if you want to make the index.dat files visible, you can do that in Windows Explorer's folder options.

Can I delete index.dat files?

You cannot delete index.dat filesas long as Windows is running. That's why Max Net Shield needs to restart your PC in order to delete index.dat files.

Be aware that as soon as Windows starts, new clean index.dat files will be created, ready to record your steps.

Does deleting index.dat files affect my PC in any way?

Deleting index.dat files is quite safe and besides freeing up some disk space, has no other effects.

Why does the index.dat file still exist after I erase it?

The index.dat file stores information about what web sites you have visited and what cookies have been saved. The index.dat file is always locked by the system when Windows is running and cannot be deleted.

Is it possible to delete the index.dat cookie file but keep other index.dat files?

Yes, but the contents of index.dat files are in close relationship with each other. Thus generally to delete the contents of any index.dat file, it is best to delete all index.dat files at the same time to avoid errors.

Why is there some browser history still there after erasing?

You should close all the browser windows before erasing because the files cannot be erased when they are in use. For MSN, AOL and Netscape 7, even if you close all the windows, they may not close completely. Please check the system tray (lower right area of the screen) to see if there is an icon, and if there is, then right-click on it to close it.

Why is the location bar history of Netscape still there after erasing? I use Netscape 7.

Please close all the Netscape windows before erasing with Netscape 7. There may be an icon of Netscape 7 still on the system tray (lower right of the screen). This is Netscape Quick Launch and you need to right click on it and close it before erasing.

How can I set my Max Net Shield to run automatically?

In the Schedule tab, select the "Daily" option in the "Run on" box, and if you want it to execute at specific intervals of time, then select the duration in hours in the "Run after each" box. If you want it to execute using a specific time schedule, then select the desired time under "Time" box.

Why is the Date option not active? What can I do to make it active?

The default selection in the "Run on" box is Daily, so the Date option is not active. It also won't be active under circumstances when the name of the days will be selected. You can only make it active if you select either Date or Date & Time under Date heading. This option will be useful if you want your software to execute on a specific date and/or time.

Spy Killer

What is Spyware?

Spyware is a software that is launched without your knowledge every time you connect to the Internet, and uploads information from your PC.

What is Adware?

Adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running.

What are Spyware cookies?

A Spyware cookie is any cookie that is not used only by a single site for its private interactions with its users, but is shared across sites. When multiple sites read from the same cookie, or when they pass info from the cookie on to another site, those sites effectively share information.

How does Max Net Shield Spy Killer protect me?

Spy Killer uses a new and different approach to Spyware. Spy Killer blocks the intrusion of these programs before they are allowed to access your PC and personal information.

I can just turn off images to get rid of ads. Why use Spy Killer?

Spy Killer has several advantages over doing this:

1) Even if images are turned off, your web browser will show a blank box where the ad would be if you did show the image. With Spy Killer, this box is gone too, giving you more screen space to see what you want.

2) With Spy Killer, you might not have to turn off images anymore. Most ads will be gone and you can see the images without seeing the ads!

Is there not a law against Spyware?

There is a bill. Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., introduced S. 3180, the "Spyware Control and Privacy Protection Act" on Oct 9, 2000. Under this law, manufacturers that build spyware into their products must give consumers clear and conspicuous notice - at the time of installation - that the software contains spyware. Such a notice would describe what information would be collected and to whom it would be sent. The spyware would then be forced to lie dormant unless the consumer chooses to enable it. S. 3180 would exempt spyware used to gather information that would only be used to provide technical support for the software, or to determine if a given user is a licensed user of the product.

File Encryption

What is encryption/decryption?

Encryption is the process of encoding data into cipher, a form unreadable without a decoding key. Decryption is the reverse process of converting encoded data to its original plain text form. When a user encodes a file, another user cannot decode and read the file without the decryption key.

What does it mean to encrypt a file?

Encrypting a document means to scramble the contents using sophisticated and proven mathematical formulas. There are a variety of well-accepted algorithms for performing this encryption process that have been proven secure over many years through rigorous testing.

What's the difference between 128-bit and 64-bit encryption?

The difference between these two types of encryption is merely capability. 128-bit encryption is exponentially more powerful than 64-bit encryption.

Are there any folders that I cannot protect?

bullet File Encryption will not permit you to protect folders that, when encrypted, might inhibit the operation of your system. These are:
bullet Entire drives, such as the C:, D: and A: drives
bullet The Windows directory and its subdirectories
bullet The Program Files folder

Also, you may not select folders that have already been encrypted.

Can I encrypt a folder on a compressed drive?

Yes. File Encryption fully supports all types of disk compression. The process for encrypting folders on a compressed drive is identical to the process for encrypting on an uncompressed hard drive.

Can I encrypt folders on network drives?

No. Folders on network drives cannot be encrypted.

Can I encrypt just one file in a folder?

Yes, you can encrypt just one file in a folder.

What if my machine loses power while encrypting?

File Encryption encrypts data very quickly; even large folders will be encrypted in a matter of seconds. However, in the unlikely event of a power failure or other interruption during the encryption process, File Encryption has an internal process which ensures no data is lost or corrupted.

What is encryption on-the-fly?

With on-the-fly encryption, the files are encrypted at the same time that applications read and write them to the disk. For example, if Microsoft Word writes parts of a document to the disk, these parts will be encrypted on-the-fly before they are written to the disk. This way the files are never without encryption on the disk.

How are files decrypted once they have been encrypted?

Once you have encrypted a file, you can decrypt it the opposite way. Just select the encrypted file as the source, provide the required password, and select a destination. Now you are ready to decrypt the file. Just click the Decrypt button and your file is decrypted.

What is BossKey?

Boss Key lets you hide/show your main browser windows immediately by pressing the Hot Key "CTRL+SHIFT+H/CTRL+SHIFT+S". It's very useful when you are surfing a website and then someone (your boss or anyone that you don't want to see your screen) walks in. You just hit "CTRL+SHIFT+H" and the browser windows will all disappear. They will reappear when you press "CTRL+SHIFT+S

What is Stealth Mode?

Stealth Mode Lets Max Net Shield Eraser to operate in an invisible mode, this will not show an icon on the system tray. In Stealth Mode, it can run Auto-erasing in the background quietly. You can press the Hotkeys CTRL+SHIFT+S / CTRL+SHIFT+H to show/hide Max Net Shield Eraser.

What is Shielding and How does it work?

Shielding provides protection against spyware/Adware ever installing and can also prevent spyware from running if it is already installed on your machine. SpyKiller works by settings "kill bits" in the registry. These "kill bit" registry entries are set for the spyware ActiveX CLSIDs (unique IDs that identify an ActiveX control). When a kill bit is set for a CLSID, the ActiveX control that uses that CLSID cannot install itself via your browser, nor can it run if it already installed. Microsoft sometimes uses these kill bits for fixing Active-X security holes. SpyKiller shields from 229 spywares/adwares.
